Demand for trucks remains strong in the month as the uptick in the overall economy augurs well for the transport and logistics industry.
The top truck brands published their monthly wholesale numbers (vehicles shipped to their dealers) of overall commercial vehicle sales for August’2022. All the players including market leader Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Eicher Trucks, and Mahindra & Mahindra maintained their growing sales in the month as demand for trucks remained robust.
The August'22 number indicates a stronger economy, higher consumption, the arrival of a good monsoon, bumper crops and festivals accelerated demand for trucks across the country. Truck sales across the board remain buoyant as last-mile, light, medium and heavy-duty segments saw a high number of sales in the month.

Let's look at the number of top truck brands in the month.
The market leader Tata Motors' overall domestic commercial vehicle sales increased by 12% to 29,313 units in the month. (August 2021: 26,172 units). The M&HCV continues with a strong run, up by 49% to 8,727 units. (August 2021: 5,840 units). The ILCVs registered a drop of 11% to 4,106 units, the cargo SCVs and pickups are the largest segments with a volume of 14,181 units declined 5%. The commercial passenger carrier increased by a massive 170% in the month to 2,299 units.
The month has turned out to be highly bullish for Ashok Leyland, as the total domestic sales grew by 58% to 13,301 units. (August 2021: 8,400 units). The M&HCVs sales were up a whopping 92% to 7,671 units, the trucks were up by 83%, and buses by 340%, with total shipments to dealers of 7,051 units and 620 units, respectively. The LCVs sale grew by a strong 28% to 5,630 units (August 2021: 4,414). The total domestic sales cumulative stands at 63,140 units against 33,079 units in the same period last year (+91%).
Mahindra & Mahindra too witnessed robust demand for its trucks in the months across the board. The light commercial vehicle segments of less than 2 tonnes sold 3,896 units (+125%), the 2-3.5-tonne GVW pickup segment continues to be the biggest volume driver for the firm, totaling 16, 940 units of sale (+157%) and less than 3.5-tonne GVW, and the heavy-duty trucks 656 units, up by 28%. The auto-rickshaw sales in the month recorded a sale of 4,793 units, up by 85%.
Eicher Trucks sales increased by 17% in the month to 4,530 units the month. (August 2021: 3,864 units). Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses sold 110 units, down 12%.
Maruti Suzuki, India’s top car maker with just one truck-Super Carry on sale, posted a total volume of 3,371 units in the month against 2,588 units the same month last year.
