In that case, there are two incredibly segment defining products. Tata Motors Ace Gold and Maruti Suzuki Super Carry-both of them fit the bill perfectly! So which should you consider? The Tata Motors Ace is now available on retail sales in petrol, diesel, and CNG fuel options. At the same time, the Super Carry comes in petrol and CNG variants as the company discontinued its diesel variant in the BS6 emission regime. Both the trucks have different specifications in each fuel variant, as the power figures are slightly different, and hence each variant is tuned to those elements. However, Tata Ace, a revolutionary truck-which, has set-up a high benchmark in almost every key aspect. At the same time, Super Carry has also earned a name for itself as a highly durable and performance-oriented truck. Both the trucks cater to the sub-one tonne cargo carrier segment, yet the power and torque figures are different on each one of them. Let's compare them to key parameters. 

Exterior & Dimensions

Mini-truck buyers aren't highly concerned about the look, yet these last-mile trucks have evolved a lot into aesthetically appealing ones. And the customers don't complain as they are getting a highly contemporary looking truck with all the performance characteristics in-built. Tata Ace is known for its modern look over the years and so does Super Carry. Both the trucks score high on the design, appearance and styling. 

The Ace Gold retains the famous and modern front fascia with a familiar look; the headlamps are nicely designed for better visibility, nice car-like design elements, and the Tata Motors logo in the middle makes its really elegant truck. The bumper is strong, and the large windshield has got two wipers, a bigger outside review view mirror. The Ace family of trucks has become synonymous with the Indian last-mile trucking, loved by millions of Indian truck drivers and owners. The Ace Gold gets two lengths of 3800 mm in petrol and diesel and 4075 mm on CNG, the width is 1500 mm, height between 1840 to 1860 mm and wheelbases of 2100 mm and 2250 mm. The cargo load body comes in 2200, 2520 mm in length, 1490 mm in width, and 300 mm in height.

The Maruti Suzuki Super Carry comes with bigger size headlamps, dual wipers with washers, a stronger and durable bumper, and a wider windshield for comfortable visibility while driving. The Super Carry stands 3800 mm long, 1562 mm wide, and 1883 mm tall, and comes with a wheelbase of 2110 mm. The cargo load body is 2183 mm in length, 1488 mm, and 300 mm in height. Some valuable equipment on the exterior includes rope hooks, front mud flaps, rear fender, tailgate chain, 13-inch and others.

Interior & Comfort

The Ace has a comfortable and roomy cabin with a lot of space to store, pleasant and enjoyable to drive for all-day long. Ace is known for its generous headroom and legroom, even for slightly tall drivers with comfy seats both for the driver and the co-driver. To make the cabin even appealing, Ace Gold gets a modern digital cluster, big glovebox bottle and document holder, and a USB charger. The steering wheel is quite smooth to operate, and the dashboard comes with all the vehicle displays and information to keep the driver aware of the vehicle condition. 

The Suzuki Super Carry has a spacious cabin with adequate space, clean, comfort, and fitted with key features. The tiltable 3-spoke steering wheel is supported by a sliding driver's seat for a comfortable seating position and a fatigue-free driving experience. You also get cabin light, driver side sun visor, driver side pocket, sliding back window, bottle holder, 12v accessory socket, and floor carpet, etc. The instrument cluster has a speedometer, digital fuel gauge, trip meter, and multiple other indicators.

Engine & Performance

Tata Ace earlier available in diesel and CNG options only; however, Tata Motors launched the petrol variant with the introduction of the new BS6 emission. The diesel engine is 2-cylinder, 700 CC naturally aspirated DI engine, the petrol one is 275, multi-point fuel injection system, 4-stroke water-cooled engine and multi-point gas injection 694 cc water-cooled CNG engine. The power figures are diesel 19hp and 45Nm, petrol 29.5hp and 55Nm and CNG 26 hp and 50Nm of torque. The fuel tank on each variant includes 30 litres on the diesel model, 26 litres on petrol and 70 litres on CNG variants. The payloads diesel and petrol 750 kg and CNG variant 640 kg. 

Super Carry powertrain options include multi-point fuel injection G12B 1196 CC petrol and a 1196cc CNG. The two engines produce 72 hp/98 Nm, 64hp/85 Nm of power, and torque, respectively. Both the variants are with a five-speed manual gearbox that works along with a single plate dry friction. While the fuel tank on the petrol is 30 litres of fuel, the CNG trim comes with 35L with two cylinders. The higher power engines allow the Super Carry to take up to 740 kg in petrol and 625 kg in the CNG model effortlessly. Both the models can do a top speed of 80 kmph, and the petrol & CNG models feature a gradeability of 21%.

Key Aggregates

Apart from the dependable modern powertrain, the aggregates are equally vital for trucks' overall performance, and both the trucks have super-quality aggregates and comfortable handling. Ace Gold gets a single plate dry friction diaphragm type clutch, front disc brakes and rear drum type, parabolic leaf spring at the front & rear suspension along with hydraulic, double-acting telescopic type, the radial tyre are 145R 12 LT 8PR size. The turning radius is also adequate at 4.3 m for petrol and diesel models. The steering is mechanical and in variable ratio.

Super Carry also gets equally strong and durable aggregates for reliable performance. It has a ventilated front and drum brakes in the rear. The clutch is single plate dry friction, while the suspension on this mini-truck in the front is Macpherson strut with coil spring and leaf spring rigid axle in the rear. The manual steering in rack and pinion gear makes the truck easy to handle. The tyre comes in 155 R13 LT 8PR in size, offers a nice pickup and helps in higher mileage. The turning radius is 4.3m, a top speed of 80 kmpl and gradeability of 21%.

Verdict

Tata Ace Gold is known for its versatility and easy to drive and pocket-friendly to maintain. The truck has a proven performance record across rural and urban roads and can carry full-load quite effortlessly without the lag of power or pickup. Tata Motors has further refined this truck with higher power and several features and an additional petrol variant in the BS6 era. This makes India's popular mini-truck even more compelling to a diverse set of customers. The Super Carry is an equal bargaining truck established in India's highly competitive mini-truck segment.
