FADA 3-Wheeler Retail Sales Report A 4.57% YoY Drop In December 2024

FADA released retail sales data for the 3-wheeler market in December 2024, which showed a total of 93,892 units sold, down 4.57% YoY from 98,384 units sold in December 2023.

The all-India vehicle retail sales data for December 2024 was released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the highest authority on the retail sales of the Indian automobile sector. This FADA sales report also includes the 3-wheeler retail sales performance. To offer a thorough understanding of the Indian 3-wheeler market, FADA has examined the proportion of retail sales that differs depending on the urban/rural divide.

Retail sales in rural areas were 54.7% of the total 3-wheeler sales in December 2024, while retail sales in urban areas contributed 45.3%, according to data from both urban and rural RTOs (Regional Transport Offices). This suggests that the urban 3-wheeler market in India is growing by roughly 10%.

Indian 3-Wheeler Retail Sales In December 2024

FADA divides the 3-wheelers category into several subcategories, including e-rickshaws (passengers), e-rickshaws with carts (goods), 3-wheelers (passengers), and 3-wheelers (personal), to give a comprehensive picture of monthly retail sales performance. Based on year on year (YoY) sales comparison, every subcategory witnessed a sales decline, except for e-rickshaws with carts (goods).

Retail sales of passenger e-rickshaws fell 9.43% YoY from 45,100 units sold in December 2023 to 40,845 units sold in December 2024. Retail sales of e-rickshaws with carts increased by 57.80% YoY in the last month, from 3,692 units sold in December 2023 to 5,826 units in December 2024. 

The 3-wheeler (goods) category saw a 4.44% drop in retail sales in December 2024, selling 9,122 units as opposed to 9,546 units in the same month of 2023. Retail sales of 68 three-wheelers (personal) units were made in December 2024, down 19.05% YoY from 84 units sold in December 2023.

The 3-wheelers (passengers) category observed retail of 38,031 units in December 2024, reflecting a 4.83% YoY decrease in retail sales, as opposed to 39,962 units sold in December 2023. Consequently, retail sales of 3-wheelers in India decreased by 4.57% YoY, from 98,384 units in December 2023 to 93,892 units in December 2024.

Brand-Wise 3-Wheeler Retails In December 2024

The 3-wheeler retail sales numbers show that Bajaj Auto sold 28,998 units in December 2024, surpassing 31,561 units sold in December 2023 to take the top rank among 3-wheeler OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). The company's monthly retail sales decreased 8.12% year over year, according to the data.

In December 2024, Bajaj Auto held the biggest market share of any company in India's three-wheeler industry, with 30.88% of the market, according to FADA. Retail sales of Piaggio three-wheelers fell 17.79% from 7,869 units in December 2023 to 6,469 units in December 2024, indicating a 6.89% market share.

Retail sales for Mahindra increased by 4.18% YoY in December 2024, from 5,904 units sold in December 2023 to 6,151 units in December 2024. During this time, the company's market share in the Indian 3-wheeler market increased to 6.55%. A market share of 6.52% was reported by Mahindra Last Mile Mobility in December 2024.

From 3,818 units in December 2023 to 3,800 units in December 2024, YC Electric Vehicles’ retail sales decreased 0.47% year over year. Atul Auto sold 2,229 units in December 2024, up 14.90% year over year from 1,940 units in December 2023. Compared to the 1,605 units of 3-wheelers in December 2023, TVS Motors sold 1,909 in December 2024, an increase of 18.94% YoY.

Compared to 2,653 units in December 2023, Saera Electric Auto's December 2024 retail sales of 2,101 units indicated a 20.81% YoY decline. Dilli Electric Auto’s City Life brand witnessed a 10% YoY rise in retail sales, selling 2,061 units as opposed to 2,290 units in December 2023. In December 2024, the Mini Metro EV saw a decline in retail sales of 21.87%, selling 1,197 units compared to 1,532 units sold in December 2023.

Bottomline

Sales of the 3-wheeler segment decreased by 13.33% month over month, from 1,08,337 units sold in November 2024 to 93,892 units in December 2024. Overall, the Indian 3-wheeler industry has experienced a monthly retail sales drop in December 2024.
