Technology is changing with a blink of an eye. Where many of the passenger vehicle manufacturers are adopting the latest in-car infotainment, the commercial industry is no immune to this transition. While Mercedes Benz claims to be the first manufacturer to bring Apple CarPlay infotainment system to their trucks, Scania is also gearing up to equip its trucks with the latest in-car connectivity.
The Swedish automobile giant also claims to be the first to introduce such system in truck category. The new Apple CarPlay seamlessly integrates all the necessary features such as access to phone, messages, music, navigation and a variety of third party apps. The infotainment will feature 7-inch touchscreen and Siri voice control functionality. Scania says that device with iOS 7 and above can be connected via USB to fully access it handsfree.
Apple CarPlay support will be introduced coming June 2017 while earlier version of this infotainment system can also be updated, provided they have voice recognition functionality. For the mass Android user’s community around the world, company has also introduced MirrorLink connectivity that will allow Android smartphone users to handsfree control the vehicle infotainment system.
Björn Fahlström, Scania Trucks product management VP says that the new system gives safer access to user’s smartphone while on the move. He also said that this technology will be offered in many of its trucks in future. Looking at this transition, Indian automobile industry which is one of the biggest in the world could also adopt such technology in future. Scania Trucks are being sold in the Indian sub-continent, so we can expect this technology to be introduced here too.
Recently, BharatBenz, the subsdiary of Daimler Indian Commercial Vehicles (DICV), has introduced upgraded BS-IV emission compliant trucks which feature functionality like cruise control, AC, reverse camera, etc. So it is expected that Scania could be the first in India to give better options to their customers in terms of in-car infotainment to have an upper edge against its rivals.
