Post Testing, Kamaz to Send Driverless Trucks on Cross Country Tour

Published On Oct 26, 2015By Tushar Vijay

Months ago, reports had claimed that Russia based Kamaz was working on a project to bring autonomous trucks. A few weeks ago, the company had validated significant progress by recording a test run of the driver free truck. It has now surfaced in the web that the company's driver-less trucks are to embark a tour of the European segment of the vast country. Extensive testing is already taking place for the machines, and the company plans to begin live field tests on the the Moscow-St. Petersburg motorway the following year. After this, the brand plans to take the trucks across a cross-continental trip, starting at Helsinki and concluding at Beijing.

Vedomosti, a business newspaper in Russia claims that the testing for the vehicles will be carried out in alignment with the “High Speed Transport Corridors for Unmanned Vehicles” initiative from the Russian government. According to the newspaper, the testing process will include 5-10 ordinary Kamaz trucks, all of which would be incorporated with technology that enables driver free operations. The driver of the lead vehicle will allow the vehicle to conduct the run on its own, intervening only when needed. If the testing process is cleared as successful, the driver-less trucks would then be sent to the Russian section of the 'New Silk road', a pathway that stretches from Helsinki and then carries down Finland, Belarus and runs all the way down to Beijing, China.
